Hello again!
This past week has been very eye opening.
In ISM, we practiced giving and receiving interviews as professionals. It was very informative and showed me what I need to work on. One of them being, over the phone interviews or calling for information and directly speaking to authority figures. Unfortunately, I think the only way to get better at this is through practice.
However, even with that little bit of practice, I already feel more confident and prepared.
Today in church, we had a very nice lady take pictures of some of the classes going on so that she can put them on our church website. Although my field is not photography, I think my inner artist came out and gave me the courage to go up and ask her about how she got where she was and why she is doing this as a career. She explained to me how she had just recently graduated and is working at a studio in Denton, Texas. She went on to say that she found out about our church thorough a friend of a friend. This made me realize just how important networking is in the professional world. Even though our fields are similar in the aspect that they fall under the "Art" category, and usually is seen as a pretty laid back field, it is obvious that just knowing people, and knowing the people they know is important.
One other thing I want to add is that since I have really begun this journey of aspiring to become a graphic designer, I've noticed something really interesting. I see design everywhere!
Just sitting in class, or church, or when I'm driving, there is design in everything and everywhere. The typography on books, the lines that create a room, or a street, the color schemes in every aspect of a product. All of these things other people look over, I can't stop noticing. The only downside to this, is noticing all the imperfections and flaws within a design. And i'm not sure about you, but if the spacing in-between letters are off, I will cringe; and if I see a design that is over-clutted with way too many colors, I couldn't even look at it for more than a few seconds before trying to correct it in my mind.
Which leads me to the last thing I want to talk about: Inspiration. Sometimes, especially as an artistic person, Its difficult to know what exactly to make a design over, and what kind of style you want to go for. Thankfully, this helpful thing called the internet lets you look up and find other designer's works that you can pull ideas from. In no way am I saying that it is okay to just take another designer's creation and call it your own, but instead to look at the way they create artworks and their process behind it, and try to incorporate that into my own work has been a tremendous help. One of my favorite designers is a college student who I found on YouTube by the name of Ana Marta. She is studying Graphic Design in Italy and her work is absolutely stunning. I love how all of her works are similar in coloring, with muted pastel colors and how she is a minimalist when it comes to design works like me. If you ever get the chance, please go look her up, because the designs she makes blow my mind.
Overall, I think that junior year has officially set in, and i'm starting to realize how much works its going to be. Oddly enough, I'm excited. I know that it is going to be a lot of effort on my part, but I'm very anxious to see how much I have grown at the end of the year, as well as seeing the work I will create.
